First Electric Nissan LEAF Taxi Arrives In Rome

Nissan and the taxi company Unione Radiotaxi of Rome are making electric vehicle history in Italy.

For the first time in Italy two zero-emission, Nissan LEAF electric vehicles will operate in Rome as part of the Taxi 3570 fleet. The taxis will be supported by a unique mobile quick charging station, developed in conjunction with Nissan to provide ultimate flexibility.

“We are very proud to be the first in Italy to introduce zero-emission taxis with our Nissan LEAF. Thanks to our experiences abroad we have no doubt about this being the ideal vehicle for Taxi operators,” said Bruno Mattucci, Nissan Italy Managing Director. “Moreover, the Nissan quick charging station makes battery recharging easy and convenient. With zero emissions and ultra-quiet running, electric taxis make life in the city better for citizens, tourists and taxi drivers.”

Nissan LEAF has been in use as taxis across Europe in Lisbon, Amsterdam, Newcastle (UK) and Barcelona. Taxi Electric in the Netherlands have already covered over 1.5 million km on its Nissan LEAF fleet, with zero mechanical breakdowns or flat battery situations.

The goal of the partnership between Nissan and Unione Radiotaxi of Italy is to transform the taxi service in Rome, where traffic conditions are tough and the air quality poor, to be cleaner and more sustainable.

The agreement also includes the installation of a static Nissan CHAdeMO quick charging station in the HUB of Taxi 3570 at Fiumicino Airport. The CHAdeMO quick charger is able to recharge vehicles from 0% to 80% in less than 30 minutes.

The taxis are supported by an innovative mobile quick charging system, developed in conjunction with FCS Mobility – converting a Nissan NV400 into a mobile charging station. The unique van-based station has batteries on board to provide clean renewable power to the LEAF taxis in the city when necessary. With 130 lithium-iron-tetraphosphate batteries, holding 100 kWh of renewable solar energy, the CHAdeMO compatible NV400 conversion can charge one of the Taxi 3570’s LEAF from 30% to 80% in just 15 minutes. Recharged using renewable sources, the NV400 conversion gives Taxi 3570 full freedom across Rome, where EV infrastructure is still in the development phase.


Nissan Italy and Taxi 3570 will support and train “eco taxi drivers” in collaboration with LUISS University Master in Eco Mobility. Eco mobility training will improve the quality of life and savings of Taxi 3570 drivers who run overall more than 500,000 km per day on the streets of the Italian capital.

3570 is the largest taxi organization in Europe, with over 3,700 members, 10 million taxi services per year and has long-standing reputation for its investments in innovation and technology.

URI (Union of Italian Radio Taxi, of which 3570 is part) since 2012 invested in studies and projects aimed at the analysis of electric mobility and related systems and charging nets for taxi public transport.

These studies confirm that electric vehicles such as the Nissan LEAF support taxi urban mobility and that systems adopted over the years by taxis will help identify the best location of the EV infrastructure.

The objectives of this initiative include a test of Nissan LEAF, already operating in several cities of the world as a taxi, and set out the guidelines for an effective and economically sustainable smart grid for electric charging in Italian cities.

U.S. Army HERCULES Recovery Vehicles

BAE Systems To Upgrade U.S. Army HERCULES Recovery Vehicles

Work on the contract will extend the M88 production line within the Combat Vehicle Industrial Base through 2016.“This contract provides enhanced capabilities for America’s soldiers and will help preserve the defense industrial base by retaining critical employees and unique skill sets,” said Adam Zarfoss, director of Artillery and Recovery Systems at BAE Systems. “The HERCULES is a significant upgrade over its predecessor and is essential to fulfill successful recovery missions.”

The fleet of Army Armored Brigade Combat Team (ABCT) vehicles is getting heavier, making it increasingly important that the recovery fleet is upgraded to support them. With its 70,000 pound boom, the HERCULES is able to hoist and tow twice the weight of its predecessor, the M88A1. The HERCULES, which provides recovery support to soldiers in the field, is the only vehicle able to recover the M1 Abrams tank and the heaviest mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) variants in a combat environment.

The upgrade work will begin immediately and will be performed primarily by the existing workforce at BAE Systems in York, Pennsylvania, with additional work performed at Anniston Army Depot and BAE Systems’ Aiken, South Carolina, facility. The contract continues the U.S. Army’s program to pure-fleet its M88s to the HERCULES variant. To date, BAE Systems has converted nearly 650 U.S. Army M88 vehicles to the HERCULES configuration.

Casio Encourages Digital Learning With Introduction Of C-Assist

Technology is becoming more mainstream in the classroom and educators are always seeking new ideas and tools to seamlessly integrate it into their lessons. C-Assist Mobile Application

C-Assist is compatible with both Apple® and Android® platforms and enables educators to display and annotate content and presentations directly from a mobile device. One additional function is remote PC access which allows users to remotely access and display content on a PC connected to the projector. Real-time projection of photos can be enabled by activating the device camera with the dedicated app. This also allows educators to use a mobile device as a hand-held document camera, which proves helpful for projecting 3D objects in real-life circumstances. In addition, there is also an image capture function using the mobile device’s camera to snap an image and send it directly to a Casio projector.  While using C-Assist, educators can also access the Web and project online content on a large screen.

Sony Expands SRG Full HD PTZ Camera Line-up With New SRG-300SE Model

Sony Electronics announced the SRG-300SE, the newest addition to its SRG high definition remote-operated camera line.The SRG series is designed to combine full high definition video capabilities with ease of use. Since the introduction of the SRG-120DH and SRG-300H pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) cameras last fall, the SRG cameras have been widely adopted in a variety of applications including houses of worship, local government meetings, sporting events, healthcare and university classrooms.

The new SRG-300SE can simultaneously output 3G-SDI and live IP streaming content. The new camera features full HD (1080/60P) imaging, 30x optical zoom plus 12x digital zoom with a 65-degree viewing angle to produce H.264 IP video streaming with selectable bit rates. It also can simultaneously output 1920 x 1080/60p video over a single BNC cable through 3G-SDI that can run approximately 70m or more, easing installation and adding more flexibility to customer’s live production needs. Users also have an expanded menu of pre-set options from 16 up to 256.

Users can operate the camera either by industry-standard VISCA™ serial control or through an IP-based computer interface capable of remote operation through any Internet-connected computer. The SRG-300SE incorporates powerful, professional features that are simple to program and store. Its user-friendly menu is accessible via a web browser and allows for easy control of the camera’s PTZ movements. The easy-to-operate interface provides monitoring plus full access to A/V camera settings.

It is available in a black or white housing and can be mounted inverted from a ceiling or in normal desktop orientation. With the use of third-party environmental housing domes that are currently in development, the SRG-300SE can be used outdoors in the future.

Leveraging the Latest View-DR Technology with SRG Cameras

Like the previous SRG series cameras, the SRG-300SE incorporates Sony’s latest View-DR technology with its 1/2.8 Exmor™ CMOS sensor enabling the capture of high-quality images with an extended wide dynamic range, an essential feature for visual communication applications. View-DR technology produces clear, visible images in challenging lighting environments from strong sunlight to a dimly light room. View-DR brings out details even with extreme backlighting which can turn faces into shadowy figures in non-enhanced images. The camera can pan across and maintain visibility despite shifting from front-lit to back-lit views, for indoor and outdoor applications.

For example, in a typically low-lit teaching environment, the lecturer stands alongside a large, bright projection screen. View-DR technology ensures that both the presenter and the presentation materials are clearly visible so students can view both the material and facial expressions and gestures of the lecturer. The SRG-300SE can also be used in reality TV production, where there is a need to capture indoor scenes and then pan/tilt to a preset location outdoors without losing the talent’s facial expression.

The SRG-300SE meets the growing demand for streaming and recording lectures for distance learning, corporate events, local government meetings, worship services, training, and other applications where content must be captured regularly in a set location without manual intervention.

At a later date, they can review the full HD 1080/60p 3G-SDI video in more precise detail from the exact same camera angle.

New PMW-RX50 3G-SDI Portable Deck a Perfect Match for SRG-300SE Cameras

Sony’s new PMW-RX50 3G-SDI portable recorder is the perfect companion for both stationary and mobile recording setups with SRG-300SE camera. It incorporates a 3.5-inch LCD display, two SxS card slots, XLR audio inputs and built-in speaker. It is ideal for content viewing and instantaneous copying. An optional external USB hard disk drive adds capacity and flexibility to offload 1080/60p content recorded onto SxS memory card for archival purposes. The PMW-RX50 can record/playback 1080/60p signal over 3GSDI. A single BNC coaxial cable run is all that is needed to deliver the highest quality 1080p/content.

The SRG-300SE is scheduled for release in December 2014, with pricing to be announced. The PMW-RX50 portable recorder is planned to be available in October at a suggested list price of $6,250.
