Microsoft will make the dashboard experience much faster by releasing a major new update. Having been built with Kinect in mind, the Xbox One dashboard can be tricky to navigate with the controller, and is long overdue some shortcuts.

The Xbox One dashboard was built with Kinect in the mind, from the overall user interface to the basic fundamentals that assign system resources accordingly. Microsoft has slowly walking back some of those decisions with improvements focused on quick access to features with the controller. But there are some inherent problems with dashboard performance. In a recent blog post discussing a new Game Mode for Windows 10, Microsoft was happy to announce that performance improvements were not set to only affect Windows 10. Every Xbox One will see an update coming to the Guide that will make it faster to complete common tasks,’ explains Mike Ybarra, the head of platform engineering for Xbox. ‘Through one press of the Xbox button on your controller. You will be able to pull up the newly enhanced Guide as an overlay on the left side of your screen no matter what you are doing.’

Microsoft is also planning to rebuild popular ‘multitasking experiences’ with speed in mind. Ybarra cites ability to the record clips, and adjust their length, as well as access them all directly within the new guide. Microsoft also add a new achievement tracking overlay, Gamerscore leaderboard, new Cortana design, and a music controls.

Users of Xbox One are acutely aware of the sluggish response time with the dashboard and will welcome improvements that speed the processing up. It is not clear when the new guide changes will be in place according to Microsoft. But it is thought that these may align with the planned Creators Update release for Windows 10 PC’s in April.
